Monasteries and Churches

The essential part of the cultural heritage and history of Romania is perhaps best represented by the religious buildings whose architecture combines Byzantine and western influences.

The originality of the local art has created churches with wall frescoes in Moldavia and Bukovina, while specific to Maramures are the wooden churches with a high spire like roof. Churches in "Brancoveanu style" predominates in Wallachia and fortified churches are specific of Transylvania.

Sucevita Monastery - Frescoes

is founded by the Movilesti boyars, whose representatives will climb on the ruler's seat the sixteenth century. The older news about the monastery comes from Grigore Ureche. Since 1595, when Jeremiah Movila occupies the throne of Moldavia, for the monastery is the beginning of an era of prosperity, becoming one of the richest and most important of Moldova.

The fortified walls are high and thick, with imposing towers at the corners and a tower above the chapel's vaulted entrance. The church was built on a tall stone pedestal. Eastern fašade is formed by a straight wall which corresponds inside to the pronaos and the three apses. The smooth curvature of the line between the apses and the strait wall is supported by high and thin reinforcements. A continuous row of niches decorate apses, giving a pleasant appearance of the straight and curved surfaces of the facades.

The field of painting, developed in three bands bounded by green lines, creates a sustained horizontal rhythm, mixing the subtle elements of the architectural decoration from the vertical.

The tower, situated on three bases bring some innovations: a square base and increased number of peak bases.

The painting has been preserved in excellent conditions and has a high artistic value.

Putna Monastery

The beginnings of the monastery falls over five centuries ago. In 1466, <<Stefan Voda has commanded Ion Vistiernicul give way to the construction costs at Putna>>.

Church Construction began in 1466 and ended in 1469, in 1481 its fortifications were completed.
Nearby, on the Valley of Putna river, is located the hermitage of Daniil Sihastru (the hermit), digged in rock.

Inside the church was decorated with murals, which have suffered greatly during the many restorations.

In the
southern part of the monastery, is the grave of Stefan cel Mare (Stephen the Great), covered with a beautiful canopy of white marble. Near his tomb is the one of Mary Voichita, the third wife of Stephen. At the north are situated the tombs of Mary of Mangop, the second wife of Stephen the Great, and his son's Petru and Bogdan

In the monastic complex, the only fully preserved construction from the fifteenth century is heritage tower.

The Church of the Curtea de Arges Monastery

Built by Neagoe Basarab on the place of another older church.

It's construction began in 1512 and was finished in 1517. A distinct feature of the monument is the riches decorations, a belt composed of four branches of braided stone surrounds around the church, dividing the walls in two registers.

The roof, made of lead, is also decorated.

Near the church is the well known Manole's fountain. The legend has written his name in the conscience of generations as a symbol of sacrifice in achieving this wonderful specimen of art.
